Artist statement

Blokes are a fascinating bunch aren’t they? As one myself, I can’t figure em out… We can be god awful a lot of the time, but most of the time I think we’re just big scared babies that would like it if you could hold our hand and tell us how to do stuff… as long as other blokes are doing it too.

This small collection of artworks I’ve made featuring REAL blokes probably won’t help a whole lot but they were nice to make.

About Jacob Boylan

Jacob Boylan is a visual artist based in the Northern Rivers. Jacob started an Art Education degree at COFA in Sydney before making the move north and finishing with a degree in Visual Arts at SCU Lismore, majoring in print-making in 2017.

Jacob’s practice involves collecting source material from second-hand books and using found imagery and objects through the broad capabilities of print making, collage, painting and installation. Through the use of visual puns and the re-contextualisation of existing imagery, Jacob encourages viewers to look at seemingly banal imagery in new light. The recycling of imagery and objects is an important component of Jacob’s practice, in an image saturated world, he sees it as reducing what he calls “visual pollution”.

With a deadpan, tongue-in-cheek style, and a limited colour palette, his work explores concepts of Australian identity, often using references to sport, class, colonialism, alcoholism, pub culture and gambling.

He has exhibited at a number of galleries in the Northern Rivers, Sydney and Brisbane including solo shows at Lone Goat Gallery, Good Space and group shows at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and many more. He was also a finalist in the 2020 Hurford Hardwood Portrait Prize.
